When job hunting, everyone wants to know the best cover letter format and the best way to write their resume. They want to know the buzzwords that will get their job applications found and read. They want to know the secrets to getting a job interview from their CV. It is always the same, regardless of whether they are hunting for offshore drilling jobs or white collar management jobs.
The truth is that there are no silver bullets to job hunting. There is no magic cover letter, resume and CV that will automatically get a person an interview. It is all a numbers game. As the Germans found to their cost in World War 2 against the Russians, quantity trumps quality. The German Tiger tank was at least 50% better than the Russian T-34 tank. The T-34 was not the best, but it was still good enough. And the Russians outnumbered the Germans at least 10 to 1. In some battles, they outnumbered the German tanks 100 to 1. Needless to say, they ultimately drove the Germans out of Russia all the way to the gates of Berlin. It is the same with resumes and job hunting.
That said, there are three important principles that will improve a job hunter's chances of getting his cover letter picked up by the offshore drilling companies looking for workers. The first and most important is to tell the prospective employer why they should hire him. The simplest way is to copy down the job scope and requirements from the job posting advertisement and briefly write down the relevant parts of his job history demonstrating that required experience or skill.
The second principle is to show the prospective employer why he is more special than his competitors. For example, someone looking for a roustabout job on an offshore oil rig may want to highlight additional useful skills he may possess ... say his previous experience working on scaffolds or operating a crane.
The third principle is to make the prospective employer an offer he cannot refuse. One example is the ability to start work immediately. Another is the possession of all relevant licenses and certifications required to work in the jurisdiction where the oil rig is located.
The cover letter is an important part of job hunting even for physical work like offshore drilling employment. A good cover letter will get the job hunter's resume/CV read, potentially leading to a job interview. Unfortunately, there is no magical technique that will guarantee this. On the other hand, the three principles described above will greatly increase his chances of success if he sends out enough job applications.
