About Tummy Tuck Recovery

In any form of surgery, the recovery is a very, if not the most important step of the whole process. Depending on the extent of a surgical procedure, recovery times will vary. Some, like surgical mole removal, can have a short recovery time, while others, like a tummy tuck, can take a lot longer. Due to the price of tummy tuck becoming more and more within the reach of many people, the procedure has become very popular. But sometimes, patients who are overexcited to get the procedure done find themselves very stressed due to the recovery needed afterwards.

Depending on a person's physiology, age, and health, the amount of recovery needed for a tummy tuck can be between 4 to 7 weeks. During this time, it is important that patients follow the instructions of the surgeons properly. This includes keeping an eye out for any complications that might occur, taking the prescribed medication properly and on time, and regulating the amount of physical activity they do as the weeks pass.

The first week of recovery is often the most critical, as many complications can arise during this time if the patient is reckless. While walking is encouraged, as it counts as gentle exercise that prevents the formation of blood clots, excessive physical activity will not yet be allowed. Also, pain, swelling, some bleeding, and discomfort can be present. The prescribed medication will help, so it is important that patients take them as instructed. If any unusual complications occur, it is important that they be reported immediately to the surgeon.

As the weeks progress, the stitches will be removed and patients will be allowed more freedom to increase their physical activities. As a precaution, however, doctors will often provide specialized clothing, such as abdominal binders and elasticized stockings, in order to help prevent blood clots from forming and stop the incisions from reopening.

So long as patients properly follow the instructions of the surgeon, and take immediate action on any further complications, the recovery process can be less stressful than one might expect.
