Acai Berry Nutritional Profile

Acai Berry has been elevated to a super fruit since research has proven it has the highest antioxidant levels of all berries, weight for weight. Its rich supply of anthocyanins places it above red grapes and blueberries for its free radical fighting abilities. Additionally, acai berry contains an overabundance of nutrients to add to its super food status.

Vitamin and Mineral Profile
Like other berries, acai is a good source of the antioxidant vitamin C. However, this only applies to the fresh berry and fresh juice bottled at source. Vitamin C is very sensitive to processing and the dried acai supplements contain virtually no vitamin C. Acai berry is also a good source of other antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin A and B3. Vitamins B1 and B2 are also present in fair quantities.

Not necessarily the most abundant berry when it comes to minerals generally. Acai does however supply an impressive amount of copper, the highest of all fruits to date. Some other trace minerals are present, which include zinc, iron and magnesium.

Amino acids
Even though amino acids do not come in impressive amount in fruits - as we don't really eat them as a main source of protein - acai does supply an impressive range of amino acid, which consist of 8% of the total berry. In fact acai boasts 19 recognized amino acids, including almost all the essential amino acids that we need from our diet. These amino acids include glycine, proline, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, valine, serine, tyrosine, aspartic acid, arginine, histidine, alanine, serine, tyrosine, and glutamic acid.

Fatty Acids
Acai berry is actually quite 'fatty' with 1/3 of the whole berry actually consisting of fat content. The majority of the fat is healthy polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. 10% polyunsaturated, mostly in the form of linoleic acid, and 60% monunsaturated mostly in the form of oleic acid. The other 30% is made up of saturated fat as palmitic acid.
