Acne Treatments

Acne results when sebum is unable to escape from the pore, resulting in a red bump, blackhead, or cyst. Acne often befalls those within the 12-24 age range due to increased hormone activity, resulting in the overproduction of sebum. Still, acne can occur at any age. For some, one treatment will work. For many, a multi-faceted approach to the problem will yield better, longer-lasting results.

Treatment starts at home with a skincare regimen. Many believe that acne is due to under-cleansing of the face. While true to a certain degree, over-cleansing can dehydrate the skin, resulting in an overproduction of sebum. It is important to use a gentle cleanser when washing your face and to follow up with an emollient to moisturize. Your skin type - oily, dry, or combination - will also dictate what products you may need. Much of this may be discovered through trial and error.

An esthetician is trained in skincare and can suggest what acne treatment may work for you. They also specialize in cleansing and extraction, with products and tools that may not be available to you at home, to decrease or even cure your skin ailments. For many, a visit every month or few months is sufficient and beneficial in conjunction with at-home treatment.

Acne treatments may also be prescribed by a doctor. They may be applied topically or taken orally. For females, birth control may also be suggested. Thankfully, dermatologists carry samples of many products for you to try before making a commitment.

With so many factors to consider, it can be difficult to discern what acne treatments will work best for you. For some, the acne solution may be more easily found than others. Some may see results overnight, while others may not see results for several weeks. Be patient, research, and ask for help, to achieve the clear skin you seek.

  1. Diet is very important for preventing acne. Avoiding nuts, nut oils, chocolates, candy and spicy foods can make a great difference. It is hard to give up such comfort foods but when one has to choose between that and a clear skin, the choice should be obvious. High end acne treatments also help but those work the best when you start using them at the first sign of red spot, before it develops into pus filled acne stage.
