When it comes to being at the top of the search engines, it doesn’t take a lot of brains to realize that there is more to it than just having a pretty looking site.  In fact, some of the top sites for various search terms are down right ugly.  So, what does it take to make it to the top?

Let’s start off our discussion with the first part; choosing the right keywords.  This is not some fancy formula or some sort of scam to grab people’s emails or spyware type of stuff.  Choosing the right keywords means picking the terms that are in your businesses niche and tailoring an effective campaign to get visitors to your site.  It is as simple as that.

There are tools available to help you do this.  One of the most effective ones is Google’s Keyword Adwords Tool.  Since Google has demonstrated its ability to be the ‘big fish’ in the internet pond, you’d be wise to use their own program to help your site rank higher for the terms you are wanting to be known for.  Keep in mind that the most competitive terms are that way because there is big money involved there.  Don’t think that because you are a really nice company and have a snazzy new website, that you will magically float to the top.  In fact, you will not even be on the radar screen of the Google search engine without the next effective way of ranking.

Unless you are a well-known brand or have some other government or educational institutional backing, you are likely going to have to utilize the second part of the strategy mentioned above; article marketing.  This term is what refers to the use of written content that is placed on sites other than your own around the internet that point links back to your site.  You get a two-prong effect from this.

What Are the Effects of Article Marketing?

The first effect is that you can get some trickle traffic from people visiting these other sites that happen to ‘click through’ to your site.  The second effect, and more important for our interests, is the authority and respect that you get from having other sites pointing links to yours.  You see, this is how the search engines determine how ‘trustworthy’ or relevant your site is for the terms selected by the searcher.  There are a number of sites dedicated to accepting articles from a wide range of categories and topics that are designed for this purpose.  Some big ones are EzineArticles.com and GoArticles.com.  Some more ‘mom-and-pop’ ones that still have utility but not the big name are places like InfoBarrel.com and ArticlElements.com.  If you are looking for ways to improve your site’s webpage rankings, start with these strategies, continue to add unique content to your site and watch your internet marketing efforts pay off.
