Avoiding Scams with Craigslist Cars for Sale

Craigslist is a great place to find cars for sale in your area, but it has a bad reputation with scams. There are in fact a number of scam artists out there selling and buying things through Craigslist, but this is no different than what is happening everywhere else on the internet nowadays. To keep your money safe, you simply need to know what to watch for in buying Craigslist cars for sale. Diligent shopping should provide you with the perfect vehicle you are looking for.

You should start by looking at the language the ad is written in. It doesn’t have to be in perfect grammar, but if there are blatant spelling and grammar errors, they may be a sign of a foreign scam artist. You can still pursue the ad, but note that language barrier during your conversations to see if something seems off.

Also figure out if the car for sale is just too good to be true. A lot of people paint their cars to be a lot better than they actually are, hoping to get some sort of quick sale. If you suspect that there are false aspects of the ad, ask for the car’s VIN to run a history report of it. Then you can compare the history with the post and see what doesn’t match up.

You should never pay for a car until you see it in person. If you do this, you at least need to have a signed contract from both parties stating that you have a certain period of time to inspect the car before the sale is final. This is usually 24 hours. Inspect the car yourself, and then have a professional mechanic look over it to make sure it is in proper working order. If everything seems alright, you can make your purchase like you wanted to.
