If you live in New York or New Jersey, you probably are served by Verizon for the local phone company. Verizon has been gaining momentum over the past few years with their new fiber optic service called Fios. But what if you have DIRECTV, and are fairly happy with the service. Is switching to Fios the right move? How do DIRECTV and Fios compare?

The main thing people are considering when they look at pay television providers is the price. Of course this is a good idea, as most subscribers pay anywhere from $75 to $150 on their cable bill every month. But when comparing DIRECTV vs Fios, you should look at a few additional things like HD and price.

High definition content is important for those who have upgraded to a flat screen LCD or plasma TV. Its really not of much use until you hook up with a provider that can offer you lots of HD content. DIRECTV was the leader in HD in 2008 as they rolled out nearly 100 hi def channels. But since then Verizon has also deployed a ton of HD, so both companies are now about equal in this area.

When it comes to sports programming, you will find the basics like ESPN and Fox Sports on both DIRECTV and Verizon Fios. Where the difference comes in is if you are a hardcore NFL or NASCAR fan. With satellite service from DIRECTV, you can get the NASCAR Hotpass package for free, and the NFL Sunday Ticket if you are willing to shell out the money. Fios bundles do not offer access to either one of these offers, so if they are of importance to you then DIRECTV is the way to go.

Fios does offer access to high speed internet as well as home phone service, whereas satellite technology does not make these services available yet.
