Anything over 100 years old is considered an antique. And many sewing machines older than 100 years can still be found at antique stores and flew markets. Some will need repair and some are in excellent shape. Those that are in good to excellent condition are great collector's items.
Today's sewing machines are, technologically, miles ahead of the antique machines. Many of today's machines have computers in them, which allows the sewing of intricate designs. Some even have the ability to connect to the Internet so that if the sewer finds an interesting new pattern, they can download it to their machine.
One that that antique sewing machines have in common is that they are 100% metal, which helps to explain why the well maintained units still work about 100 years. If the movements and gears were oiled frequently and properly, it is still possible for that machine to sew a great seam today. These older machines were even more powerful than our machines of today because the driver is pure metal, unlink the plastics used in today's sewing machine.
Another reason for the need for power behind the old machines is that they were used to sew uniforms and needed to be capable of running a seam through material that was thick and durable. Mostly used by women, these machines were able to turn our several uniforms a day.
Antique machines were table mounted. They had to be strong and sturdy. They were put to use often and did not have any fancy stitches. They were just required to make a strong, straight seem through tough, durable material and nothing more.
Whether you prefer the hard working antique machine of long ago, or the newer stylish computerized ones of today is purely a matter of personal preference. But the fact is nothing can beat a well maintained antique sewing machine for getting the simple job done.
