Once a year you are eligible to receive your free credit history report from the credit bureaus.  Or you can look for your free copy on such places online as annualcreditreport.com, this is a site which is mandated by Government.  Since these reports are free you may think this is going to be easy, but each have their own format, so you need to do more than simply get a copy.  But don't get discouraged, don't end up frustrated, don't end up abusing your credit and having bad credit loans once again or in your future at all.

Make A List

Make yourself a list of anything on your credit report that either is outright wrong or just looks odd to you.  Keep an eye out for duplications, overstated amounts of balances, or closed accounts which are reported as being still open.  These can all be a detriment.

Dispute The Items

Send a simple letter to dispute the erroneous entries on your credit report.  For example if you have an account which you closed and it is report as being open, with or without a balance, simply state in your letter that this account has been paid in full and closed.

Your Results Can Now Be Managed

The bureaus will respond to your letter.  If they correct the errors, great, but sometimes there are cases that you don't like what they have to say.  Or they may even out right refuse to fix it.  Just send another dispute.  It is as easy as that.
