Doll’s Prams through the Ages

Prams were first popularized as a must have item for any family with a baby in Victorian times when carriage makers began to use their skills to produce baby carriages for rich families and even royalty including Queen Victoria. Owning a pram soon became a status symbol and parents loved to show off their offspring in the latest model by the well respected companies of the day such as Silver Cross.

Children love to copy their parents and little girls soon caught onto this fashion trend by copying their mothers and nannies and wanting to take their dolls out for a walk in their very own dolls prams.

Pram manufacturers soon realized that there was a market for creating smaller versions of their full size prams for the children of well off families. Pram companies started taking their original pram designs and producing them at a smaller scale suitable for transporting dolls and at a right height for children to push.

In the 1960s the craze for doll prams really started to take off and toy companies started to produce their own versions of prams for dolls. These toy company produced versions were usually plastic and of less quality than the original prams produced by companies like silver cross but they were designed to appeal to small children in colors like pink and were more affordable so that every family could enjoy them.

Wooden dolls prams were also made by woodworkers and wooden toy companies like BRIO and became popular for use with toddlers due to their sturdy nature and lack of small parts to trap fingers and break.

Nowadays it is possible to buy all sorts of doll prams, from the ultra realistic versions made by silver cross, to models made for popular dolls like Baby Annabell in ultra girly shades of pink.
