These are cars that the insurance company has decided that it is not cost effective to have the car repaired so they declare it a total loss, pay off the claim and the car goes to the junk yard or is bought by the salvage dealer. Salvage car dealers are becoming more common today because of the number of salvage cars available for them to buy, they then need to repair these damaged cars and sell them as repaired or just sell them in repairable condition, either way they need to sell them quickly, so they offer a real bargain to the buyer just to get them sold.
At one time it was hard to find a salvage car that did not need a lot of work to get it repaired, it was just worth more and the repairs were cheaper, today with the cost of repair work going up it is possible to find a good running car with less work needed for a good price. Still it would be a good idea, if you’re not an experienced mechanic to take a trusted one along with you when you go to look at a car or at least arrange for one to look at the car once you have picked out a particular one.
