Getting Help for Opiate Addiction

What is the proper way to get help for opiate addiction?  There are actually several choices that a person has who is trying to get clean and sober.  Let's examine some of the options.

1) Go to a treatment center - pretty much any addict who is struggling to get clean from opiates would benefit from starting their journey in recovery at a treatment center of some sort.  Most of these will have a detox unit where the addict can be eased through the withdrawal process.  This can be done by giving them medications that can directly alleviate the withdrawal symptoms that can be so uncomfortable.  In addition to this, getting opiate addiction help at rehab makes sense because you have so much support right there with you, in the form of peers, therapists, and 12 step meetings.  All of this can come together to produce an environment that is most helpful to someone who is really looking to change their life.

2) Go talk with your doctor - there are a few things that a doctor might do that can help with drug addiction.  For one thing, they can help you to find alternative medications that may be able to treat your pain without being addictive.  For example, there are prescription medicines that are not addictive that are stronger than what you can buy over the counter, such as Torodal.  There are also medications such as Suboxone that can help to treat pain and reduce cravings for other opiates.

3) Go to a 12 step meeting - this can be useful if you do not have the money or the resources to go to a regular drug rehab, as that can be quiet expensive.  Many have got clean and sober just by walking into an AA meeting and deciding to stick and stay, as they put it.  If you are desperate then you can get quality help at these meetings, and if you are willing then you can put in real effort and get good results from those programs.
