Golf Holidays Portugal – A Golfing Guide To Estoril, Oeste And The Algarve

Golf holidays in Portugal are synonymous with sunny Mediterranean weather and championship courses. This article points out the key golfing regions which have become popular along with some of the standout clubs for each region.

For an ultra-convenient golf holiday Algarve has top-notch courses and resorts all located within a short drive of Vilamoura. This can make things hectic in Summer on the links as thousands arrive to play the resorts (Oceanico alone have over 10) and some of the standout courses such as Quinta do Lago Laranjal and Vale Do Lobo.

But it can really pay off to experience the golf courses around the rest of the Algarve’s coast. Out to the east golfers can seek out the Benamor, Quinta De Cima and Monte Rei. While traveling west the courses are more prone to the effect of the Atlantic breeze. The breeze can make playing the hillside Boavista or the desert-style Oceanico Faldo courses all the more challenging by requiring a low ball flight into the wind.

Golfers flying into Lisbon invariably make the scenic day trips out to the Estoril region’s great courses along the Tagus. The most famous course here is the Praia D’El Rey but for even more variety it is worth checking out the Roquemore designed Golden Eagle course, test yourself on the Penha Longa championship course and have an adventure by ferrying over to Troia’s notoriously windy links course.

A lesser known region in Portugal (at least to seasoned golfers) is the Oeste area. The region is playing catch-up developing resorts and courses on a par with the south. While the course heritage may not be there yet, it can be less hectic than the Algarve in summer with equally nice drives in between golf clubs in Paimogo, Vimeiro, Sizandro and other villages in the region.
