Green tea is one of many natural products with claimed weight loss effects. While browsing the internet I have found people who tell you how green tea products have helped them lose weight. Being the curious type, I decided to investigate further and looked up research studies to see what the science said. What I found was surprising! Research does provide a very strong case for green tea as a weight loss aid at high doses.
So what's the deal?
Green tea contains two components that induce thermogenesis, a process that increases the amount of calories we burn each day. One study suggested that we can burn an extra 70-80 calories per day with the right dosage.
These two components found in green tea are caffeine and catechins. Caffeine has been known for a long time to have a small thermogenic effect. However, catechins provide evidence that they have a much stronger effect. A study conducted in Japan separated participants into two separate groups. The one group was given a drink containing only caffeine, while the other group was given a drink containing the same dose of caffeine plus catechins. The group that was given only the caffeine experienced very little weight loss, while those who were given the catechins experienced a noticeable amount of weight loss. This is just one of several studies that provided such evidence.
I read enough to convince me to try out green tea as a weight loss aid first hand. I decided to undertake an experiment. From the research I read it was suggested I needed to drink 5 cups a day to induce weight loss, others suggest as many as 12 cups a day are needed. So I settled for drinking 5 large cups per day for a period of 25 days. I steeped the tea bags for at least five minutes in boiling water, as this extracts the greatest amount of catechins from the leaves.
