How I store my Mazda hardtop

The hardtop for the Mazda MX5 is a great accessory - it prolongs the life of soft top hood, gives you better rear visibility and increases the head height in the cabin. The main drawback with the hardtop is having somewhere to store it during the summer months, is not practical just take it off every time you feel like having a drive and this is mainly down to the fact that it takes more than one person to remove it. It is not particularly heavy but you need someone either side of the car to take it off. This means that most hardtop owners would remove the roof during the summer months and store it.

I made my own storage solution for my MX5 hardtop roof which has so far it has proved to be very successful:

I had two pieces of timber they were about 2 inches deep 12 inches long and 4 inches wide. On the larger face I glued about an inch of dense foam I then put my hardtop up against a shed wall with the lip of it resting on the wooden blocks. This meant that no weight was placed on to the chrome brackets at the rear of the roof. Then I got the luggage strap and threaded through the main clips at the front of the roof and fasten them to bracket on the shed wall. This meant that it was virtually impossible for the hardtop roof fall over. The only problem I was then left with was how to prevent things knocking against it and potentially scratching the paint. The way I did this wasn't quite so sophisticated… I merely got an old sleeping bag, through it over and secured in place using some string.

I can safely say that my MX5 hardtop has been fined stored like this although I do have to be careful - when getting things in and out of the shed or putting things on the shelf above it - that I don't knock it. I'm not saying that you should store your hardtop like this and I certainly can't be held responsible for any damage you incur but it seems to work fine for me.
