Lanyard Badges

When one thinks about lanyards, the picture that comes into one’s mind is that of lanyard badges that allow one into places other people cannot go, imparting importance and a sense of elitism to the bearer of the badge. However, lanyard badges can do a lot more that let one into a door.

A promotional lanyard can serve a variety of purposes. At a trade show, a lanyard badge can be used to show which exhibits you have seen; when you wear a competitor’s lanyard to a company exhibit, you are saying, “I am a serious player, and I am in control!” At a job fair, collecting lanyard badges is a way to document that you were there hunting jobs, in case your state Employment Office wants documentation.

Lanyard badges are the new, cooler version of the “My Name Is …” sticker. The badges create a sense of belonging to a group, whether you are at a political convention, church gathering, or trade exhibition. Locally well-known lanyard badges are often accepted by banks and other trades people as a secondary form of identification.

Often, the lanyards themselves have distinct meanings. In some companies, the color of one’s lanyard shows which department or project one is working on. Many lanyards have company logos on them, which means companies can use them as advertising media. These lanyards are used to advertise everything from Nike shoes and clothing to computer software to Jesus (WWJD?). Because America is truly a classless society, an individual’s place in the status quo is often determined and demonstrated by the status symbols one chooses; it seems that anything can become a status symbol in America. Lanyard badges are just such a thing. They help one show where their wearers belong, whether by occupation, affiliation, or association. Marketers of all kinds (merchants, recruiters, or otherwise) would be wise to put the power of the lanyard to work for them.
