Remote Control Boating For Kids

Kids have a knack for controlling radio controlled vehicles. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to bond with their children. A less popular but equally fun radio control hobby is in RC boats. If you live around a body of water or go on fishing trips, you can drive your very own RC boat on the water.

They are powered by rechargeable battery packs and can last for around 30 per charge. Their speeds range greatly from slow children’s models to high end expensive professional ones. The boats are controlled with a radio transmitter which sends signals through a dedicated frequency.

When looking for a boat, it’s important to determine if it will fit your child well. These boats can get very fast which may be overwhelming to a young child. I recommend starting out with a slow model with limited controls. Forward, left and right are basic controls for a boat. In this case, the transmitter would be considered a three-channel because it has three control options.

The transmitter is usually powered by AA batteries and can last dozens of sessions without needing replacements. The boat, on the other hand, will last about 30 minutes depending on how hard you drive it. Applying maximum speed will yield shorter play sessions. You might want to consider getting several battery packs and have them all charged so you can enjoy your boat more.

Boat models are designed with one or more propellers. More propellers generally means that the boat will go faster if the propellers each have their own motor. The boat turns left and right using vector controls, otherwise known as a rudder. The rudder is positioned behind the propeller where the thrust is being generated. As the rudder rotates left and right, the thrust is directed accordingly and the boat turns. Special gaskets keep the boat from filling with water, but you will still have to empty water out occasionally. These boats have special plugs where you drain excess water out as it enters. If you see the boat start to lose buoyancy, take it back to land and dump it.

If you get more than one RC boat, make sure that each boat is on a different frequency. You will see the frequency on the front of the box and is measured in Mhz. Newer 2.4Ghz models do not need to have different frequencies.
