Selling Gold Scrap

Gold prices are rising and if you have any old gold that you don't use, then now is a good time to have it valued and obtain some cash for it.

But when selling gold scrap there are some things that you should consider in order to ensure that you get the best deal.  Prior to selling old gold make sure that you have it valued at a local jewelers in order to get an independent opinion on the carat value of it. The carat value is the measurement of the gold content in the whole item jewelry that you want to sell. Gold is a soft substance, until it is mixed with copper alloys to make it hard so that a goldsmith can design something with it.

Any gold bought in the West will have a hallmark or sign to it, indicating the level of gold in the item. It could be 18 carats or 22 carats. Once the jeweler weighs the gold they have to deduct the weight of any stones and give you a price accordingly. Carat can sometimes be spelt as karat as well. If you are an expert then you can always check the price of gold online and you will be able to roughly calculate how much you are going to get for it. The actual measurement of gold is one troy ounce equals 31 grams, divide that into 31.1. so you know the value of your gold per gram. Then multiply the new dollar amount times the amount of grams in each item according to carats and finally multiply that number into the gold purity. But if you cannot be bothered with all this then just ask your jeweler to do it for you.

Keep in mind that not all jewelers buy gold. So check online or in the local papers for small adverts for people buying gold. Make sure you choose a reputable dealer. Your gold may be worth a lot more than you think. It is highly advisable to ask a quote from at least four jewelers so can compare prices and decide which ones to go for. You will find that depending on where you live and which ethnic group you belong in, it can be really easy to get a good price for your gold. If you are Middle-Eastern or Indian then there are many jeweler shops that deal with this sort of thing and you can get a high price for your gold jewellery. So if you have some scrap gold then check with other types of gold shops as well.
