Two varieties of solar panel exist. These include photovoltaic panels that are used to generate electricity and solar panels that are used to generate thermal energy to aid in the heating of water.
Individual photovoltaic cells typically consist of silicon that has been treated so that it is able to generate an electric current when it absorbs sunlight. Numerous solar cells are incorporated into a solar panel. A photovoltaic panel is able to produce larger amounts of electricity in comparison to a single photovoltaic cell. Three main varieties of photovoltaic panel exist. Each type holds its own advantages.
Systems of solar panels are of optimum efficiency when they lie perpendicular in relation to the Sun. The optimum angle for a solar panel formation is equivalent to the latitude at which the arrangement of panels is situated. For horizontal rooftops, an array that tilts upwards is recommended. On a flat roof, the optimal tilt for a solar panel formation is around 40 degrees. However, a compromise has to be sought between the angle of the tilt of the solar panels and factors such as wind loading and aesthetics.
The average cost of a system of solar panels is $20,000, inclusive of installation. However, you do not need to purchase a whole system. The amount of solar electricity that you will receive will depend upon the number of photovoltaic panels you choose to install. This means that even if you choose to install only a few photovoltaic panels, you will still receive electricity, albeit a small amount.
It is believed that for every $1 you expend on solar panels, an average of $4 will be saved in the cost of your own energy production. Solar derived electricity typically costs on average $11 per watt installed. Many homeowners may meet the eligibility requirements for the receipt of state grants towards meeting the costs of solar panel installation.
Solar power may not save you a great deal of money but once they have been installed, you can rest in the knowledge that it solar panels are beneficial to the environment, will increase your property's market value and will ensure that you are not as susceptible to increasing energy costs.
Once installed, photovoltaic panel systems will continue to function efficiently for around 25 years. The majority of home solar panels are believed to payback the cost of installation after approximately 15 years. The payback period of solar panels is dependent upon the type of fossil fuel previously used, the amount of energy consumed, and inflating energy costs.
