During the early 19th century there was no agreement on the number of holes on a golf course, the localities argued widely on the matter. When the popularity of Leith, a golf course with 5 holes, was slowly fading and St. Andrews became the core and eventually the round of 18 holes was established. It was in 1764 where St. Andrews originally had 11 holes filed straight out alongside the shore and were played in reverse for the return journey making it 22 holes for a round of the game. The golfers decided to combine the first four holes into two which produced a round of 18 holes in the standard golf course.

Now of course that is what most golfers are looking for when they plan their golf vacation. And of course, some golfers like many other folks are suspicious and often using special trinkets and talisman that they might have received as golf gifts at one point or another. Executive Golf Courses which are also known as a “Par-3” course, is a special design of golf course that is different from a standard course. It also consists of 9 or 18 holes, all of which are a Par-3. The executive course is designed for beginner or older golfers and those who lack the time to play a round of a standard course.

When it comes to the golf course’s landscape design it has its own field of study. Some golf course architects become celebrities in their own right. The field is represented by the American Society of Golf Course Architects, the European Institute of Golf Course Architects and the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects.

While golf courses often follow the original landscape some modifications are unavoidable. This is increasingly the case as new courses are more likely to be sited on less optimal land. Trench and sand straps are almost always artificial, although other hazards may be natural.

The layout of the fairway follows certain traditional principles such as the number of holes; their Par and number of chose Par types per course. It is also preferable to arrange greens to be close to the tee box of the next playable hole this is to minimize travel distance while playing.
