The Makings of a Great Patio

Written by Patioman

There are many things to consider for how to make your patio great.  Since most parts of the country will be using a patio space in the spring and summer months more exclusively, shade is the most important thing to keep in mind.  For this there are various types of patio covers that you might find to be the perfect fit for your place.  One of our favorites is the wooden pergola.  This is one of the classic looking ones with a post and beam structure and lattice roof.  This is one of those structures that you can dress up or down depending upon your tastes.

The pergola itself is quite simple in its design so it lends itself to adornment quite easily.  For example, if you have the basic wooden pergola free-standing in your patio space, you could add various types of shades or canopies to give it additional shade from the low-lying angle of the sun at specific times of day.  At night, you could have it illuminated using any number of patio string lights.  But, the most popular of the ways to dress up a pergola is with vines and climbing plants that you can have work their way up and around the posts up over the roof.  This creates great shading and also some added ambiance.

Once you’ve got your shade structure in place, then you need to think about how you will enjoy your that patio space.  Your choice of floor options will help determine what you can place out there as far as seating goes. If you go with a gravel floor, then you might opt for some rugged types of patio furniture.  If you use a concrete or patio paver style of flooring, then you can consider more designer furniture.  A nice added touch is to bring in a patio swing.

Patio swings come in various styles.  Some hang from a chain or some type of rope.  Others are set on the ground with their own legs and support.  You can get a glider built for two or an individual swing that can support just you and your favorite cold drink.  Now, you’re starting to see how you can make your patio space great!

  1. Teak is a great material to consider when choosing patio furniture. It has traditionally been used on board boats and yachts because it holds up so well in weather.
