Tips for Customizing your Motorcycle

If you are like most people who purchase a new motorcycle, it isn't very long before you consider customizing your new motorcycle.  It is especially common in the Harley Davidson world and there is an old saying that there is no such thing as a stock Harley Davidson motorcycle.  There may be some truth to that matter from what we have seen.

Some of the most common customizations or upgrades that are performed are the motorcycle exhaust and the motorcycle seat.  Both of these items are typically the first things to get upgraded, the exhaust for the sound and performance and the seat for the comfort and the ability to ride the motorcycle longer distances.  You can stop there and be quite satisfied with your motorcycle for many years to come or you can keep right on upgrading.  The only limit is your imagination and your wallet.

There are nearly endless possibilities when it comes to the upgrades available for your motorcycle.  Mirrors, footpegs, grips, air cleaners, instruments you name it.  You can literally purchase a motorcycle in a kit form and assemble and entire custom motorcycle from scratch if you choose.

Some things you should consider when customizing your motorcycle:

  • Installation - Is this part something you can install yourself or will you have to find more money to pay for the labor to have a dealership or mechanic install it.  If you do try it yourself, will you need any special tools or things like that.
  • Resale Value - Make sure understand that the money you spend on aftermarket parts is probably not going to improve the resale value of your motorcycle.  What you spend on your motorcycle, in most cases, you won't get your money back when you got sell your motorcycle.
  • Parts quality - the quality of aftermarket parts varies dramatically so read up on reviews and do your homework on the brand of parts you are going to purchase and make sure other users are happy with them.

Some people will stop there while others will customize everything under the sun from their motorcycle headlight to harley exhaust to full custom paint jobs.  The only real rule that you need to follow is do what works for you, it's your motorcycle and you will have to be the one that lives with your choices.  Enjoy!
