Tips on Wearing White Dresses

Wearing a solid white dress is not that easy to pull off. In fact, it takes a lot of confidence and careful attention when wearing one. The color is simply delicate and the slightest mistake could cause a smudge on the dress. And even the smallest dirt is blaring on a white dress and this ruins your look right away. So take extra precaution when wearing a solid white dress either as a day dress or especially as a formal evening attire.

Since white doesn’t seem to work well with everyone, it’s important to remember certain tips in wearing one, especially a solid white dress. The most important thing is to know what kind of white suits you. This pertains to your skin color or skin type.

Not all skin tones look good in a pure white dress and so there are other “shades” of white as alternative options. While light-skinned women can practically get away with even the whitest white, women with warmer skin tones should opt for subtler shades of white, that is, ivory, cream, vanilla, chiffon, off-white, and even silver. Not only do these colors complement their skin tone, wearing an off-white dress will bring out and emphasize the beauty of their exotic skin.

A solid white dress has the tendency to “see-through,” that is, through your underwear. It is therefore important to choose quality opaque fabrics like cotton, linen and man-made fabrics to avoid embarrassing moments. To be extra safe, wear underwear that is the same color as your skin. This avoids the see-through effect of a solid white dress.

You can also wear a slip underneath your dress so you do not have to check from time to time if your underwear is showing. It avoids anxiety and makes you more relaxed and comfortable wearing your white dress. Especially when worn as a formal evening attire, it is best to choose a flowing design to avoid clinging to your body and expose those “unwanted curves.” Fabrics such as satin and silk are great as a formal evening attire since they have a natural flowing design that gives a woman’s body a sexy look and an air of elegance.

Wearing the appropriate shoes and accessories is essential to a solid white dress. Wearing white shoes tends to overwhelm your dress and may create a blaring effect so it’s best to wear neutral colors like beige, tan, brown and camel. Silver seems to be the best color to pair with white because it creates an elegant effect that is almost goddess-like. Wooden or metallic jewelry goes well with a solid white dress.

A white dress seems to create a “goody-two-shoes” image on the wearer. Showing some skin on the shoulders or legs therefore is a great technique to offset this image. Wearing a solid white dress is not suitable for a business or office environment, too since it has a summery look. You can wear a two-tone black and white dress instead. Unless stated, you should not wear a solid white dress to a wedding. You might overwhelm the bride’s wedding dress and that is not a good thing. Opt for the other shades of white.

To state the obvious, wearing a white dress when you have your period is a bad idea. When you have kids tagging along, you should avoid wearing white too since we know how kids tend to get rough and dirty. Unless it’s a beach wedding, white is not advisable on wet places like the pool since it gets clingy when wet.

White may be a delicate color but it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy wearing it. The most important thing is to find the perfect fit for you. And when you feel comfortable wearing your solid white dress either as a day dress or formal evening attire, you will feel beautiful with the air of purity and elegance that a white dress brings.
