Tree Removal Hiccups and How to Overcome Them

When it comes to a home’s landscaping, a tree can be an attractive focal point or a tremendous eyesore. In most situations, trees can become displeasing to look at after having been stricken by disease or cared for inadequately. In either case, the homeowner has the choice of hiring an arborist to have it removed from their property or they can opt to topple it themselves. Each of these choices has their respective advantages, but tackling the project head on is an excellent decision if you have posses some basic agility when it comes to working with your hands and the size of the tree in question is of a manageable size. Furthermore, you also stand to avoid paying the tree removal cost which in some circumstances can be enormous.

As far as the latter point is concerned, you will have to exercise some common sense depending on the size of the crew you have helping you and whether or not any nearby obstacles exist that are prone to becoming damaged if the tree falls over them.

There are various hiccups that homeowners encounter when going about this themselves that can cause some frustration, but usually a bit of innovation is all that’s required to push forward. Most of the hurdles encountered with the process involve extracting the stump and roots. In the exhausting majority of cases, the wrong tools are to blame. If you want to save on the cost of tree removal, this is one area where you don’t want to do it. Invest in tools that you know you’ll need instead of improvising with what you already have. Taking an axe to the stump for several hours is not the proper nor most efficient method of removing it. In the end, you might regret not having paid the tree stump and root removal cost. What you need is a shovel so you can first expose the roots that are holding it into place. When the surrounding soil has been cleared, you can then take the axe and start breaking the roots apart. Eventually, the stump will become unstable and you will be able to remove it altogether.

Another common issue involves waste disposal. Generally, the homeowner will need to rent a bin to accommodate the branches, limbs and trunk. A great way to reduce spending on the project is to recycle some of the wood for use in your fireplace. You can even sell it off to offset the cost of the entire project.

Finally, there is the question of gaining access to special machinery like a stump grinder and chainsaws. Most home improvement stores carry such tree removal equipment that can be rented on an hourly basis. You may have to talk with a local arborist if you need something like a wood chipper to grind down bigger portions of the tree like the trunk.
