Using A Camera In Bad Weather

If you're a professional photographer and you need to use a camera in extreme weather conditions, there are only a few good choices for you. All of the Canon 1 series cameras are completely weather sealed, and if you buy a weather sealed lens to go along with that, you're going to be able to shoot in just about any condition of weather imaginable.

In fact, just think of it this way: you're going to give up and go in long before the camera! Most of the more recently produced L series lenses are weather sealed, but not all of them. You'll need to do a little research on each specific lens that you want to buy. Also, Canon's most recent 5D Mark II is a weather sealed camera.

Nikon also produces some weather sealed cameras. Their D3 series are weather sealed. The D200 and D300 bodies are also weather sealed. However, Nikon does not produce any lenses that are fulled weather sealed, so you're not going to get as complete a weather sealing as if you bought from Canon.

If you're a product photographer who works mainly in the studio, making excellent product photographs, this doesn't make much of a difference. If you're a photojournalist however and you will be running around in water and sand in the Sahara or the Amazon, you might want to think twice about what you buy.

No matter what you buy, you need to do a lot of research. There's plenty of cameras out there to choose from but only a few are going to be specifically tailored to your needs. After you've spent a lot of time in the field you'll realize how different cameras really are.

With all the work you produce, you're also going to get quite a variety of photos, and you'll need the best photo management software to go along with your weather sealed camera.
