There is nothing like a shiny sparkling new bathroom when you first have it installed but you can do a lot to enhance a basic bathroom and make it something wonderful whether it is brand new or not. Provided you have the basics right with a white bath tub, sink and toilet and plain neutral tiles and everything is clean you can always make your bathroom a joy to enter.
1. Add Color
White is the only color for bathrooms these days and any other color is shunned by any bathroom designer worth his or her salt, but it does not mean that you have to have a colorless room. Decide on one or two colors and add some accessories such as towels and shower curtains in your chosen color scheme to bring out the beauty of your bathroom.
2. Add Comfort
A wonderful bathroom also feels good. Make sure that you have a soft bath rug and warm fluffy towels ready when you emerge from the bath tub or shower. A heated radiator or towel rail are essential to keep the room warm in winter if you do not have underfloor heating.
3. Add Light
You need good light at the mirror for shaving and applying makeup and a gentler light for relaxing in the bath. A lighted mirror (even better if it is heated to prevent it steaming up) will help with the first lighting requirement and overhead lights on a dimmer switch will help with the second.
4. Add Sound
You will find all kinds of entertainment systems these days which are made for use in the bathroom from shower radios where you can sing behind the privacy of your shower curtain to amazing plasma TV systems built into the bathroom wall.
5. Add Fragrance
Find a pot pourri you love and replace it regularly so that it does not go stale or use one of the new bathroom fresheners you can buy which these days have a surprisingly good fragrance unlike the nasty smelling disinfectant type pine fresheners of days gone by.
