Any professional bodybuilder will tell you that a healthy diet and a consistent workout plan are essential to increasing body muscles. While these are absolutely true, getting plenty of rest each night is just as important as a lack of sleep will only end up putting stress on your body. In fact, research has shown that those individuals who only sleep for a few hours are at risk for serious health consequences.
Some of these include an increased risk of diabetes and obesity. The reason is due to the fact that sleep deprivation does not create enough insulin for the body to lower sugar levels. In addition, since you are awake for a majority of the day this actually causes you to consume more food. As a result your body is not burning enough calories which can lead to weight gain in the long run.
If you have any serious sleeping disorders like snoring problems or sleep apnea, then you need to consult a doctor right away. Consider getting a sleep apnea test done and be sure to take the necessary steps to treat any problems you may have. If these problems are left untreated, then it can be really disruptive to your life and they can even get in the way of your bodybuilding schedule.
So how many hours of sleep is enough? The answer actually varies depending on which source you go to but the general consensus is that 8 hours is adequate. There are even studies to suggest that getting 7 hours is more beneficial but these results are still inconclusive. The fact remains that if you are not getting plenty of rest, then you need to make serious changes to your sleeping schedule.
If you are on a natural bodybuilding plan, then do not underestimate the importance of getting plenty of rest. Your body muscles need to take a break too so that they can continue to develop.
