Why no Garageband for Windows?

Garageband for Windows does not exist to the disappointment of many Windows users. Garageband runs on Apple machines running OS X exclusively and is part of Apple's iLife suite. It also comes pre-loaded on most Mac computers. Garageband is a powerful and yet easy to use multi-track recorder and music editor.

Some potential reasons that Apple does not release a version of Garageband for Windows:

1.) As a Mac exclusive, Apple keeps a decent hold on market share and immediately cuts out many competitors that they would have if they offered Garageband or their iLife suite on other platforms.

2.) Garageband for Windows would not keep the perceived value of Macs as the ultimate audio and visual editing computers in the minds of consumers and professionals.

3.) Keeping their iLife and iWork suites as Mac only software will potentially draw more users to buying Apple computers. While making a Garageband for Windows might produce a lot of revenue, Apple most likely would like people to make the switch over to their platform for long-term and repeat consumers. These types of consumers always pay off the most in the long run.

At under $100, Garageband is very affordable for what it offers. It is no wonder that many would love to have a version of Garageband for Windows. However, there are other options available for the Windows user.

One great option to consider is Mixcraft Acoustica. It offers a very similar feature list to Garageband, with midi support, multi-track recording, and prerecorded loops as just a start. It also goes for under $100, with other programs that can be bought on the side to add more functionality and expand your music making capabilities.

Another very good alternative is FL Studio. Their Express and Fruity versions are under the $100 mark, allowing beginning users to get a taste of what can be expanded into a very professional and capable digital audio workstation. FL Studio is Windows only, and have long been a trusted company for home recording.

Ableton Live makes an Intro version of their professional software that is available for both Windows and Macs. Ableton is unique in that it is made to use in real time performances in addition to editing and mixing. Many artists rely on this reputable software, so starting with their beginners version would be a great investment for any budding musician or sound engineer in training.

One last program to consider is Audacity. Audacity is actually a completely free program that is available on a Mac, Windows, or Linux machine. It does not offer multi-track recording, virtual instruments, midi, or loops, but you can record, edit, and overdub with some very advanced effects. While it may not be a direct replacement or alternative to Garageband for Windows, it is a great place to start since it is free.

The listed software options used as a replacement for Garageband for Windows are all capable choices, but make sure you research the details of each one before making your final decision.
